Harvest Manitoba
On January 30th, 17 members of Oak Bluff Bible Church and Sanford United Church joined together to volunteer at Winnipeg Harvest. As we planned this as a family event we were very pleased to be joined by several young people from both churches.
We began our evening with a tour of the facility. The facility includes a reception area, several large docking bays, storage areas for perishable and non perishable items, sorting and hamper assembly areas, and a room just for bread. Did you know that Winnipeg Harvest handles over 5,000 loaves of bread every day? The facility even has a large volunteer operated kitchen and dining area for the 30 staff and 120 volunteers that work there every day. Winnipeg Harvest is a distribution centre for over 100 food banks, soup kitchens and school meal programs city wide. They also provide training opportunities in food handling, food preparation, and even offer a fork lift operator’s training and certificate program.
Once our tour was done, we were set to work sorting potatoes and onions and placing them in 25 lb. boxes for distribution to the food banks. We moved a lot of vegetables!
We are still serving regularly - please consider joining us! Contact the church if you are interested in signing up the upcoming dates!
